Chapter 222 It’s Just Me

“Didn’t you drive here?” Lewis asked.

Sierra hugged him and said coquettishly, “I’m scared. Listen to that howling wind. How can

you

have the heart to allow a defenseless woman like me to drive back alone?” She looked at him with

tearful eyes.

Sierra was attractive. She was already pretty enough, to begin with. Then, she underwent a minor face-

lift, and her face was now the definition of impeccable. How she looked at Lewis now was sufficient to

satisfy most men’s egos.

However, Lewis’ face was void of expression as he withdrew his gaze and pulled out his car keys.

“Let’s go.”

Gleefully, Sierra instantly wrapped her arm around his as she hopped into his car.

From the looks of it, he still cared for her.

Thinking about that made her feel better. Sooner or later, she would verify Lewis’ marital

status.

The wind was harsh today; it felt like a typhoon. It broke off numerous branches from the trees by the

roadside, strewing the branches all over the road and causing a mess.

Similarly, a branch broke off a tree in Styx Mansion and rammed into the window, arousing Josephine

from her dreams.

Her eyes flew open, and she scanned her surroundings. The sound of branches knocking against the

window frightened her, compelling her to leap from the sofa and flee upstairs.

A piercing pain shot through her calves the second she took a step, and she crashed to the

floor.

Josephine clutched her calves. The pain was so unbearable that it drew tears to her eyes.

She took a deep breath and tried to suppress the pain as she clambered up from the floor, quivering.

Then, she slowly made her way upstairs.

She went to the study first. She opened the door, and darkness welcomed her. The windows were

closed. Faint lights came from outside, eerily staring at Josephine like eyes in the

darkness.

Josephine slammed the door shut and dragged her feet to the bedroom. It was the same there. She

was only met by the same unending darkness, even though it was a new door.

She fumbled for the light switch and turned it on. However, an entirely white bedroom met her gaze.

White sheets covered the bed, wardrobe, and everything else; the glaring white was like an

indicator that she shouldn’t be there.

Josephine’s fingers grasped the doorframe as she stared blankly at the bedroom for who knew how

long. Suddenly, thunder crashed. Startled, she dived into a squat on the floor.

The howling wind and crashing thunder ruled the space when there was dead silence.

The eeriness was exceptionally daunting in such a vacant, huge mansion where echo followed the

slightest movement.

This mansion was no different from a haunted house to Josephine. Cupping her hands over her ears,

she squatted on the floor and pretended she heard nothing.

It was almost 1 am when Lewis returned. When he entered, he intuitively looked at the sofa, but all he

saw was an empty sofa.

He grew sullen and marched up the stairs. Once he reached the second floor, he saw a figure

crouching by the bedroom door.

It was Josephine, squatting and curling into a ball with her hands cupped over her ears as she

trembled.

Lewis’ eyes flickered. He quickly walked toward her from behind, bent over, and touched her shoulder.

The moment he came in contact with her, Josephine plopped to the floor like a startled bunny. Then

she dropped to her limbs and frantically crawled into the bedroom.

Suddenly, someone grabbed her arm.

Petrified, Josephine looked up and stared into the room. She tensed up for quite some time. before

stiffly turning to look behind.

Lewis’ face entered her line of sight, and her eyelids fluttered.

Pressing his lips together, Lewis stared at her with an incomprehensible expression. After several

moments, he pulled her into his arms. “Don’t be afraid. It’s just me.”

Josephine leaned against his chest, her senses registering his scent along with another perfume scent

that was unfamiliar to her.

But the scent of gardenia overthrew the other. It was the scent Josephine was most familiar with. She

listened to his beating heart, and a wave of calmness crept into her chaotic one.

Josephine reached out and wrapped her arms around his sturdy waist. She buried her face in him and

indulged herself in his scent.

Lewis also wrapped his arms around her, gently patting her back without a word. It took a long time for

the person in his embrace to stop trembling. Lewis released her from his hug, lowered his head, and

asked, “Let’s go to the bedroom, okay?”

Josephine looked up at him with reddened eyes, inquiring if he would stay.

He wiped her tears with his hand and said in a low voice, “I’ll keep you company.” As he spoke, he

carried her and went into the bedroom.

He tossed the white cloth covering the bed aside and put her on the bed. His gaze swept the room.

Then, he went to the closet and pulled out a blanket. Carrying it with him, he covered Josephine with it.

Josephine’s gaze never left him as he moved around as if making sure he wasn’t leaving.

Lewis cast her a glance and said, “Go ahead and sleep. I’m going to take a shower.”

He took his robe and entered the bathroom. Seconds later, there was the sound of water flowing.

Josephine gradually released her grip on the blanket and slowly closed her eyes. The storm outside

wasn’t as terrifying now.

Before this, Lewis had always been around whenever there was thunder. Because of that, Josephine

had never been afraid.

The storm outside was deafening. Although the glass door was soundproof, Josephine could still hear

the thunder rumbling. Lightning flashed occasionally too. She could even see the streaks of white with

her eyes closed.

Clutching the blanket, she pulled it over her head.

Soon, her tensed body relaxed amidst the steady splashing of water from the bathroom. Sleepiness

came to her, and she slowly drifted off to sleep.

Suddenly, the bed sank beside her, and a cool breeze slipped under the blanket. Almost immediately,

icy fingers landed on her face and body.

Josephine snapped her eyes open, and Lewis’ handsome face appeared before her.

Lewis’ fingers caressed her cheek and dived under the blanket to hold her waist, pulling her

toward him.

Josephine stared as though she wanted to see right through him. She was unsure if the man before her

existed or was a mere hallucination. She mustered her courage and felt his cheek.

It was soft and warm-he was real.

Lewis caught her hand and stared indifferently at her.

Their gazes locked for several minutes before he asked, his tone indiscernible, “Josephine, what are

you trying to do, exactly?”

Josephine blinked. His words puzzled her-she didn’t understand why he would ask such a question.

Lewis continued to stare for a long time. He said nothing and looked like he was waiting for

her answer.

Josephine lowered her eyes and placed her face against his chest, snuggling against him and

tightening her hold around his waist. Listening to his heartbeat, she closed her eyes in peace.

As though the wind and thunder left her, and the room returned to silence.

Lewis didn’t push her aside. Embracing her, he looked thoughtfully at the window, reflecting the

silhouettes on the bed.

Josephine fell asleep in his arms.

It had been long since she had such a good night’s sleep. She even had a pleasant dream. In her

dream, Lewis had turned into a brown toy bear and hugged her. His embrace was warm and fluffy.

Josephine didn’t know why she would have that dream, but she hugged the bear back and refused to

let it go, holding on for dear life.

It could be that her embrace was too tight, so the bear abruptly lowered his head and kissed

her.
