Chapter 877: Howard’s Considerate Present

Roman snickered inwardly as he watched his little cousins blushing endlessly.

Howard had never pulled his sister’s cheeks after she had begun speaking as a toddler.

The little girl had a fierce tongue and would always get him in trouble which had driven a wedge between the siblings and he chose to distance himself from her in the past.

Though they had moved past their differences and had gotten closer in recent years, he had never truly been too affectionate with her.

Unlike other elder brothers who carried their siblings and hugged them whenever they wished to or even pulled their cheeks, he had not experienced any of those, especially after Yvonne had learned how to walk.

Even patting her head was already too unfamiliar a gesture for him.

Therefore, what he had just done was out of the ordinary and had never been done ever before.

.....

Yvonne, on the other hand, was embarrassed at the thought that she, whose mind worked like an adult’s, had her cheeks squished as a child would have.

However, she was also quick to regain her composure thanks to this same mature thinking and decided to pretend that nothing had taken place.

Hence when her mother had inquired about the sword, she was more than willing to divert everyone’s attention to it.

Pulling the box brought back by the maid, she placed it before her and slowly lifted the lid.

In the next moment, everyone around the child leaned closer to take a peek at what was placed inside.

Thus their eyes laid upon a beautiful silver sword that was longer than the one Yvonne often used during her classes with the Captain.

Just a look and they could tell that it was sharp and could cut through most items with just a simple flick of the wrist.

This realization made Rutherford anxious as he was worried that his daughter would injure herself while handling this sword.

‘I should talk to Des before their next class together.’ He decided to threaten his good friend to be cautious while Yvonne used this sword in the future.

Unlike Rutherford’s worries about her safety, Raylene was marveling at how aesthetically elegant this new sword was.

She had always felt that swords, daggers, and knives used for training were far too boorish for her liking.

Therefore, she had never truly taken an interest in them and thus had stayed away from such matters in the past.

As a child, she too was exposed to swordsmanship and other forms of physical training as her elder brother, Marcus, was also keen on maintaining his fitness.

However, she had never liked them and thus chose to spend time with her nanny and her previous maid, Paula, rather than watching her elder brother practicing his sword skills.

Thanks to this, she did not know much about what were the requirements for a good sword.

However, she had begun learning about them after noticing that both of her children had similar interests and she too wished to be a part of the conversation while they discussed such topics.

Therefore, this time, she was able to understand the build of this sword which would have been an impossible task in the past.

The first metallic sword that her husband had gotten made for Yvonne was a much milder version which she had sensed was a good fit for the child’s size back then.

On the other hand, the one brought home today was much to her liking as it seemed beautiful yet functional at the same time.

‘I now understand why Vonny chose this one.’ She glanced at the sword and nodded her head.

After all, by now she had a good grasp of her daughter’s tastes.

Even if the prettiest of objects was placed before her, the child would not take a liking towards it if it wasn’t of any use to her.

At most she would toss it into her room as she had done with so many other items she possessed.

However, if the same pretty object was more than that and could be of proper use to her then she would treat it as her most precious treasure.

To prove this deduction of hers, all Raylene had to do was glance at her daughter’s neck which even now was surrounded by the cheap-looking trinket that her business partner had once gifted her.

Despite its shabby looks which could not compare to the numerous jewels she possessed, Yvonne wore the chain with a piece of glass hanging from it as it was useful to her.

The necklace moderated the temperature around her body which was more functional than any other jewelry she owned.

Thus, it went with her everywhere no matter what kind of clothes she wore or the occasion she was heading out for.

In the same way, this sword was not just pretty-looking but was also functional as it was made by keeping her body’s measurements in mind.

Her husband had once helped her understand that a custom-made sword would, at any given point, be far superior to one that was made in bulk.

With enough practice and experience, this sword would become a part of the wielder’s body which gave them the precision, flexibility, and confidence that they needed in any battle.

Therefore, she was sure that her child would also be able to bring out her best if she used this sword that was made just for her.

Yvonne had already observed this sword while she was at the store so she did not mind when her father and later even grandfather picked it up to assess it.

“Did the delay happen because Sir Smith could not find the appropriate jewel?” Rutherford spoke up when it was the old man’s turn to scan the sword.

This question was directed towards his son who had worked out the details for this gift without letting others know about it.

Howard nodded after hearing this question as that was indeed where the owner had been delayed.

Right at the point where the hilt of the sword merged into the sharp blade, there was a beautiful gem that had been embedded into it.

The creation of the sword, due to its detailed design, did take longer than expected but that wasn’t the sole reason for the delay in his plans.

It was this gem that Howard and the store owner had been trying hard to locate that had caused the date of its finishing to be pushed back until now.

“Finding the exact color of the gem was difficult,” Howard confessed while explaining that Sir Smith had been on the lookout for this gem ever since he had been asked to create this sword.

Since the precious stone they were looking for was far larger than the ones used for jewelry, they had to widen their scope of search to find one which was appropriate for the design of this sword.

Thus there had been a delay in its completion but looking at how the sword had turned out, Howard was glad that he had waited until now.

‘As long as Vonny likes it.’ He smiled while staring at the sword that was now in Grandpa Valente’s hands.

Similarly, Yvonne’s amethyst eyes fell on the gem which was a part of the reason she had been attracted to this sword.

While the body of the sword was to her exact measurements, which she now knew was all a part of her brother’s plans, this gem was what had pulled her in.

At the intersection where the hilt and the metallic blade met, a carefully crafted gem had been embedded into the sword.

The color of this gem was an exact match to her eyes which made her feel that it was made just for her.

‘Now I know it was truly made for her.’ She snickered inwardly and once again was impressed with her brother’s careful consideration while preparing this gift for her.

The rest present at the table had similar thoughts as the stone was an exact replica of the little girl’s eyes.

Finding an amethyst that large and of the same color as Yvonne’s irises must have been a hard task to complete.

However, Howard and the owner of the store had done an excellent job which had brought out such good results.

Therefore, they had high praises not only for the young boy who had planned everything out so carefully but also for the owner who had been diligent and did not work half-heartedly even when procuring the materials had gotten difficult for him.
